As I was thinking about Easter and what this weekend holds for a lot of us, I heard someone singing the song from the little mermaid.
“I’ve got whozits and whatzits galore
You want thingamabobs?
I’ve got twenty!
But who cares?
No big deal
I want more”
and it dawned on me. – the human rebellious spirit.
The basic story line of the Little Mermaid is very much the gospel message.
“Man” (the mermaid) is unsatisfied with the world he sees, rebels against ‘his’ father, enters a world he was never meant to see or function in by making a deal with the ‘devil’ and ends up being deceived. his father attempts saving ‘man’ and ends up having to give Himself in the place of ‘man’ to save them. The ‘devil’ increases in power until man runs a ‘ship’ into the ‘devil’ stabbing her to death and winning.
It’s not a perfect parallel but, Triton sacrificed himself for a rebellious daughter.
This weekend we get to feast, remember and sing about how we have been rescued from our own rebellion and given a chance to open our eyes to the beauty of our inheritance.
